The Regions of New York

Elope in New York – there are eleven wonderful regions in this great state.  Here’s a taste of each so you can decide which you love most!

Adirondack Region

The Adirondack Mountains range from 1000 to 5000 feet tall.  There are over 46 summits that are over 4000 feet high, and they are called the High Peaks.    The highest peak is Mount Marcy at 5,344 feet above sea level.    The mountain formation is made up of a 160-mile wide dome of more than 100 peaks, rather than a connected mountain range.

There are lots of things to do in this region – camping, hiking, paddling or fishing in one of over 3000 lakes and ponds.  For winter sports, visit Lake Placid, with its long history of Olympic events.   Try the luge or bobsled, or try ice skating or skiing in the Olympic Village.   Consider eloping in the Adirondacks – a wonderful memory for those who love the out of doors!

 

Capital Region/Saratoga

This region includes the capital of Albany, as well as Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs.  This area was settled by the Dutch in the early 1600s.   There are a dozen State Parks in this Region, as well as mineral baths.

The State capital of Albany is also home to the University of Albany.  Saratoga Springs is famous for its Saratoga Race Course, but prior to the addition of the race course, the city was renowned for it famous springs, which are located all over the city.

 

The Catskills

Located west of the Hudson River, the Catskills include over 700,000 acres in Catskill Park, and is a nature-lovers paradise.  Activities in this region include hiking, fishing and camping.  Winter sports include downhill skiing at Hunter Mountain and Belleayre Mountain.

You can attend concerts at Bethel Woods, which is the original site of the Woodstock festival of the late 60s….or visit Monticello Racetrack and Casino.  Consider eloping in the Catskills!

 

Central New York

Some of the cities in this region include Cooperstown and Utica.  Cooperstown has a 19th century rural village with many festive events at the Farmers Museum.  It is also the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.    Catch up on all your favorite players at this famous museum.  Visit the Utica Zoo.

With an average annual snowfall of 300 inches, there are lots of winter activities, including ice skating, snow tubing, ice fishing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling, as well as hiking and biking in the summertime.

 

Finger Lakes Region

This region includes the cities of Syracuse, Rochester, Ithaca, Elmira and Corning.   This is Wine Country!  Visit  Canandaigua Lake, Cayuga Lake, Keuka Lakes, or the Seneca Lake Wine Trails, and sample some of the wonderful wines of the region.

Winter sports in the area include downhill skiing and snowboarding and snowmobiling.  Toggenburg Mountain is a winter sport center with many scheduled activities, or try night skiing at Song Mountain or Labrador Mountain for a new adventure.

If you are near Corning, be sure to watch the glassblowing shows at the Corning Museum of Glass.    In Rochester, visit the George Eastman House & Museum of Photography.

 

Hudson Valley

Settled by the Dutch in 1610, the Hudson Valley is home to the US  Military Academy at West Point.  You can cruise the Hudson River or visit many of the charming villages featuring antiques shops, art galleries, world class restaurants and farm-to-table dining.

Just a short distance from Manhattan, you can take advantage of mountain views, wine trails and many historic estates.    Fairs and Festivals abound, so check the calendar of events for this region.  Visit Stonecrop Gardens, or take a boat trip to Bannerman Castle.

 

Long Island

The island is approximately 100 miles long and 20 miles wide, with a wide variety of things to do.  You could Elope in a Vineyard!

There are many annual events to take in on Long Island.   Plan to Elope on a beach in Long Island and arrange the date around the Irish Experience Festival,  Tulip Festival, Strawberry Fest, a Native American PowWow, the Oyster Festival, or the Dickens Festival in winter.  There’s something going on every month!

 

New York City

Elopement Destination NYC?? What can we say about one of the most visited cities in the universe??

Elope in Central Park….Elope at the Empire State Building…Elope on Broadway!!

 

Niagara Falls

The honeymoon capital of the world!!  What better place to elope.   The spectacular natural setting of this region has lots to offer.   Just minutes from Buffalo, for a big city experience.  DON’T FORGET TO BRING YOUR PASSPORT!!  Cross over to Canada to see the falls on both sides.

Take a tour of the Welland Canal System.  Visit Old Fort Niagara or Lockport Cave and do the Underground Boat Ride.

 

Seaway/Thousand Islands

The drive along the Great Lakes Seaway  Trail is 518 miles of scenic splendor.   Sheep Farms and dairy farms dot the area.

Thousand Islands Region is called “Garden of the Great Spirit” by the native peoples.   So many water activities to do in this region…sailing, scuba diving, kayaking, white water rafting, snowmobiling and tour boat rides.  Elopement and adventure go together!

 

Western New York

The Western New York Region – the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.   This Region is home to a Seneca Indian Reservation.   You can visit the Seneca Iroquois National Museum to explore the culture and history of the Seneca Nation.

Visit the Chautauqua Institution for an  “all things of life” art experience…or Granger Homestead & Carriage Museum.  They have a large collection of carriages,  from early 1800s through the mid-1930s.
